Bluewater Outriggers Fishing Report 5-29-2026
Well folks, it’s been a full week since the opening of red snapper season, and what a week it was. Customers came in droves to the Bluewater Outriggers to get geared up for the event, and from the moment we opened the doors at 6am it was non-stop action. Poor Dave’s carpal tunnel flared up something fierce from the non-stop punching of keys on the register. Jud, the new guy, turned his hand into a pincushion dishing out live shrimp by the hundreds. I had the pedal to the metal at the spooling station loading new braid on spinning and conventional reels. When those big spools of fast rotating thread had eaten away through my epidermal layer, I headed to the back of the store to wrap my hand in gauze, and lo and behold there was Shaydon, half-dressed and speaking gibberish. I was just on the brink of calling a psychiatric clinic to come pick him up when Dave informed me it was just stage 2 moderate hypothermia from being in the deep freezer trying to keep up with the cigar minnow sales. We got the kid a hot cocoa, wrapped him in some winter apparel, and within about twenty minutes he was good to go. It was one heck of a weekend with only minor casualties, but we pulled through like we always do, because putting the customer on some good fish is our top priority.
Last week’s weather did not make it easy for anglers to get out there, and there were only a few small windows of time that made it possible at all. For those that risked the storms and choppy water, the reward was worth it, and most boats were reporting that their limits were met. Lynn Mosley was one of these anglers, and she can be seen (above center) holding a big red that she landed on the boat, Reel Magic. It looks as if the weather may cooperate with fishermen a little better this week giving more the chance to get out there and get hooked up on some big bruisers. I can’t wait to see what comes in, and if God willing, get out there myself!
I’ve had a few opportunities to take small fishing breaks throughout the week and get in on some inshore action. I’m continuing to catch trout and reds under the Tapper Bridge and have noticed that the blue crabs are starting to come in heavy. If that’s your thing, now’s the time to do it. I witnessed quite a few people catching a large number of crabs to add to the ice chest.
My friend Travis Wilkes came into town with his friends and family and avoided the weather by running up to Lake Wimico and fishing there. He was pleasantly surprised at the action offered by the lake and he put his passengers on a lot of big bass. Just look at the largemouth caught by Cody Vandiver (above right)! And Taylor Dalton (above left) got the surprise of her life when she hooked into that nice doormat! Let me tell you, Travis is one of a kind and can flat put you on some nice fish.
Inshore or offshore, brackish or fresh, Port St. Joe has something for every angler right now. I hope you have a great week and get in on the action that is abundant around you!
