BlueWater Outriggers Fishing Report 12-05-2025
Well, here we are folks, it’s two weeks after Thanksgiving and if you’re anything like me, you are making that push into Christmastime.   Put away are the giant casserole dishes and wooden turkey decorations and in their place are boxes of Christmas trinkets and doodads that you will struggle to find a place for in a home that, let’s admit, has not had a proper cleaning since Turkey Day.  But who has time for all that, after all, you’re trying to get your kid’s gifts ordered online, wondering if you don’t spend that extra hundred is his/her Christmas going to be less magical?  You’ve spent hours on the phone dealing with open enrollment to health insurance companies only to leave the conversation more stressed than when you started because you’re putting you and your kid’s well-being in the hands of someone that’s obviously on their first day of the job.  You hide all this beneath a smiling exterior because who can afford to miss work after you’ve pulled the trigger on the “deluxe” Brio train set?  Before you know it, it’s time to pick your little one up from school and when you start your truck and hear Bing Crosby telling you “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas,” you think to yourself, “I wish I could give that old fart a piece of my mind!”
Excuse the language folks, I was just having a little fun amongst all the stress the Holidays can cause.  Even I’m not immune to getting wrapped up in all the mess.  The fact is I’ve been blessed in more ways than one, and when I take my biggest blessing out tonight for his favorite Lo Mein noodles before we pick up our Christmas tree at the local Piggly Wiggly I will pause and reflect on the real meaning of Christmas, and find a peace like no other.
Just as this time of the year can be stressful and confusing, that’s how I’ve found fishing to be over the last week.  Although the red tide samples taken in our bay seem to be decreasing ever so slightly, the fishing is hit or miss.... and it’s mostly miss.  I fished in and around the Mexico Beach canal on Monday evening and caught a few trout, however, I fished the same spots on a cold Wednesday morning and got skunked.  I’ve heard no word on catching fish at Clifford Sims Park and have neglected to fish there over the last two weeks. Gary Meyer and I fished the intracoastal under the Tapper bridge on two separate occasions, and we both had no luck there. It is my opinion that if you want to get a good trout bite this winter, you’re going to need a boat, and you’re going to have to head up the creeks and tributaries.  There have been reports of people getting limits and nice trout doing just this.
Offshore fishing in the area has been killer.  Gary Meyer, who I mentioned earlier, is a bit of a “local legend.”  Any man who has a dog trained to ward off fish-thieving Pelicans is alright in my book.  He’s been going offshore every week and doing great things!   I finally got him to send me some photos, and they certainly speak for themselves.  Above left you can see Gary’s crew Toby, Eric and (another) Gary with a tremendous haul of Red Snapper, Red Grouper and a massive Trigger!  Gary Meyer himself can be seen (above right) with a recent trophy sized snapper he just hauled in. Congrats gentlemen, that is truly an epic catch.
That’ll wrap things up for this week folks!  Get into the Christmas spirit and don’t let the stress bring you down.  While inshore fishing is challenging, such is life.  It’ll bounce back just the same as your checking accounts and mental well-being after this Holiday Season.  I hope to see you out there!
